Sinclair ZX81

Following the ZX80, Sinclair brought out the very popular ZX81, which was also available in pre-built or kit form. Eventhough the machine had roughly the same specifications as its predecesor, it filled a previously unseen gap in the market for home computers. It's therefore pretty easy to pick up one of these in good condition today.

I have two ZX81s in my collection - one which I built myself, and one brand new, unbuilt ZX81 kit. Despite having not been manufactured for around 20 years, these kits are remarkably still available from Zebra Systems ! Note however that these kits were intended for the South American market, and therefore come with a 110V power supply. The supplied assembly instructions and manual are not the original Sinclair versions, but these are quite easily obtained separately.
