OS: Red Hat Linux External link 7.3

Gateway Performance 500

Specs

  • 500 Mhz Intel Pentium III (slot 1) CPU
  • 192 Mb RAM
  • 2x 80 Gb 7200 RPM Western Digital ATA-100 Hard Disks
  • Intel PIIX4 Chipset
  • 100 Mbps 3com 3c905 PCI NIC
  • 16Mb ATI Rage128 AGP Graphics Card
  • LG 40x CD-ROM Drive

Character Traits

  • Well made, fairly spacious case, with all components pretty easy to get to.
  • Groovy channeled airflow system - just one giant fan in the whole case.
  • The original 13.6 Gb Quantum Fireball hard disk quietly ceased to function after about 2 years.
  • Fly-by-wire power switch, and no reset button at all.

Mods

  • I fitted an extra pair of 8cm fans to help cool those beefy disks. Although it looks like a fan can be fitted to the hard disk bracket, it didn't seem to fit, so I drilled a couple of new holes in that, and two in the case to make room for the plugs holding the fan in place.

Installation and Configuration

Pretty much all of the Red Hat distro installed from CD images over HTTP from my old LAN server. The two 80Gb disks form a RAID-1 array, using software RAID on Linux. Configured with humungous data partition (NFS/Samba External link-shared), Apache External link, Squid External link, CVS External link.
